With a variety of protein powders to choose from, determining which one to buy can be difficult. Learn what to look for when choosing a protein powder.

Using protein powder is a convenient way to get more protein in the diet, but with so many varieties to choose from, choosing the best protein powder can be confusing, especially for those who are new to buying protein supplements. The following are a few things to consider when trying to choose between the various protein powders on the market.

Determine Fitness Goals

Fitness goals play an important role in which protein powder to choose. Bodybuilders will need a protein powder with a different macronutrient ratio than someone who is trying to lose weight. Those who lift weights may look for a powder that’s high in protein; endurance athletes may want a protein powder that is high in both carbs and protein; and those who want to lose weight may want to choose a protein powder that is high in protein, has little carbohydrates and a small amount of fat.

Consider Price of a Protein Powder vs. Quality

The adage “you get what you pay for” holds true for protein powders. Although one’s budget and the price of protein powders are factors in deciding which protein powder to choose, price shouldn’t be the only reason for choosing a particular powder. There are good, inexpensive protein powders available on the market, but in some cases, as with other products, manufacturers cut corners to produce the cheapest product and the quality suffers.

Read the Ingredients List

It’s important to read the label when choosing a protein powder not only to find out the breakdown of carbs, protein, and fat, but also to look at the ingredient list. Although many protein powders contain only natural sugars, those who wish to avoid artificial sweeteners or excess sugar will want to check the label to see if the protein powder is full of added sugar, high fructose corn syrup or aspartame.

Taste is Important When Choosing a Protein Powder

Protein powders come in a variety of flavors, and although goals, pricing, and ingredients matter, taste is the deciding factor when it comes to choosing the best protein powder. If a powder tastes horrible or is chalky it won’t be used. Read credible reviews of any protein powder being considered before purchasing to reduce the chance of wasting money on a powder that tastes bad or leaves an aftertaste. Many manufacturers also offer inexpensive samples that can be ordered online so consumers can “try before they buy.”

Choosing a protein powder can be confusing since there is such a variety available, but by determining fitness goals, considering one’s budget and price, and reading the ingredients list makes choosing a protein powder much easier.
